Nei giorni scorsi i norvegesi Endezzma sono stati per la prima volta in Italia, precisamente alle Officine Sonore di Vercelli e al Circolo Colony di Brescia. Ne abbiamo approfittato per conoscere meglio la band, l’ultimo album “The Arkane Abyss” e qual è stato il loro impatto con i supporters che sono andati a vederli dal vivo.
Ciao Morten, benvenuto su Metal In Italy! Potresti presentare la band ai nostri lettori? Quali sono gli eventi principali dell vostra carriera?
Ciao a tutti! Gli Endezzma sono un’ istituzione stellare norvegese fondata da me, Morten Shax e dal defunto fratello Trondr Nefas (Urgehal,Beastcraft). Abbiamo pubblicato il nostro secondo full length “The Arcane Abyss” non molto tempo fa. Ci sono numerosi eventi nella nostra carriera, ma le uscite degli album e la morte del nostro chitarrista Trondr sono sicuramente quelle cruciali. Gli Endezza si sono rialzati come una fenice dalle ceneri e adesso siamo più forti di sempre, con una line-up costituita da fratelli.
Descrivete la vostra proposta musicale come “Black Metallic Stellar Darkness”. Cosa intendete con questa definizione?
Beh…effettivamente etichettare la musica e restringerla o categorizzarla è qualcosa che non mi entusiasma molto. Io lascio che sia la musica con i suoi toni ed espressioni a raccontare la sua storia, l’ascoltatore deve decidere dove lasciarsi trasportare. Detto ciò, non è un segreto che la maggior parte delle persone ci etichettino nella categoria delle band Black Metal norvegesi. “Black Metallic Stellar Darkness” rappresenta la nostra espressione ed attitudine verso l’arte che pratichiamo e predichiamo.
Ritieni che una band debba evolversi lungo il suo percorso e cambiare il sound seguendo l’ispirazione? O è sempre meglio mantenere dei capisaldi?
Dipende dal fine e dall’idea della band. Per quanto ci riguarda, noi non facciamo mai musica che segue ciò che va di moda al momento, ma suoniamo in base ai nostri sentimenti e a come intendiamo rappresentarli. È una sorta di colonna sonora delle nostre emozioni. Vogliamo portare il fuoco e la filosofia ardente e le linee musicali che suoniamo per supportare ciò si intrecciano spesso con ispirazioni diverse. Per noi non è importante seguire delle regole ferree o linee guida quando scriviamo musica. Penso che sia naturale mantenere dei punti fermi, se i i tuoi rapporti e la tua storia sono abbastanza forti.
“The Arkane Abyss” è il vostro ultimo album, siete soddisfatti del risultato finale? Come stanno reagendo i fan ai nuovi brani?
“The Arkane Abyss” è stato un grande successo per noi: i media hanno risposto con grande entusiasmo, con recensioni e critiche travolgenti. Siamo veramente soddisfatti per il risultato ottenuto, abbiamo lavorato duramente sull’album per farlo suonare esattamente come desideravamo. Ovviamente siamo soddisfatti quando critiche e responsi sono sorprendenti. I fan sono entusiasti del nuovo materiale. Qualcuno dirà sempre che il vecchio materiale è meglio, ma questo è quanto: tra qualche album anche questo sarà vecchio materiale!
Quali sono i temi trattati nei testi? Pensi che la musica sia un buon mezzo per condividere pensieri ed inviare un messaggio?
Il mondo degli Endezzma è un’immersione profonda negli abissi della parte più oscura della mente. È la nostra personale relazione con il lato oscuro ed il modo in cui ci relazioniamo con la morte. La nostra morte e, in generale, il concetto di morte, è qualcosa che controlla il nostro modo di vivere, anche se ci piace pensare che sia qualcosa che arrivi con un incidente o quando diventiamo vecchi. Sono i sentimenti forti e le emozioni a fare da guida nella vita di tutti i giorni. Creare una nostra saga filosofica sulla morte. Sono sempre stato affascinato dalla morte e mi lascio andare alle sue contraddizioni emotive, in qualche modo le più belle e in altri quelle che ti spezzano il cuore. Sono forze così intense, vitali e forti che si impossessano di me e mi appassionano. È tutto intorno a noi, quindi non è necessario inventare storie stupide quando le più intense e reali vibrazioni ci circondano.
Come descriveresti le vostre performance live?
Abbiamo un forte, rigoroso mantra live. I nostri rituali dal vivo sono per noi molto importanti e tutti entriamo in una certa sfera prima di salire sul palco. È questo il momento in cui ci immergiamo nel mondo degli Endezzma. Diamo ogni volta tutto ciò che possiamo offrire, mentalmente e fisicamente. In qualche modo diventa naturale quando sei preso totalmente da ciò che fai, è come sentire la pelle bruciare. Una performance degli Endezzma deve essere intensa ed inquietante.
Avete da poco suonato in Italia, è stata per voi la prima volta?
Sì, per gli Endezzma è stata la prima volta in Italia.
Vi siete divertiti a suonare qui? Cosa pensate delle persone che sono venute a vedervi?
Proviamo sempre emozioni forti durante i nostri rituali live e questa non è stata di certo un’eccezione. All’inizio la folla era un po’ statica, ma dopo i ragazzi si sono lasciati andare nel corso della performance.
Cosa pensi della scena Metal italiana? Conosci qualche band?
Non sono molto informato sulla scena Metal italiana, ma abbiamo suonato alcuni live con band italiane ed alcune di loro hanno un futuro brillante, credo. Da quello che ho potuto vedere e capire, ci sono molti gruppi che stanno crescendo.
Quali sono i vostri piani per il futuro? State preparando altre date live o festival estivi?
Si, stiamo chiudendo diverse date in questi giorni, sia singoli concerti che festival a supporto di “The Arkane Abyss”. Il prossimo mese saremo nella Repubblica Ceca e tre live in Polonia, a maggio suoneremo all’ Incineration Festival di Londra, abbiamo numerose date in Germania, Svizzera, Austria ed Olanda. Il 2018 sarà un anno molto intenso per gli Endezza e, dal momento che abbiamo già dei concerti per il 2019, saremo decisamente impegnati. Stiamo anche lavorando al materiale per il nuovo album, speriamo di tornare in studio prima della fine dell’anno.

Hi Morten, welcome to our website! Could you introduce Endezzma to our readers? What are the main events in the band’s history?
Hello. Endezzma is a Norwegian Stellar institution formed back in 2005 by me, Morten Shax and now passed away brother Trondr Nefas (Urgehal,Beastcraft). We released our second full lenght , THE ARCANE ABYSS not long ago. The main events in the bands history are numerous, but the album releases have been a crucial milestone together with the death of our guitarist Trondr Nefas. Endezzma have arise like phoenix out of the ashes, and we are now stronger then ever with a real strong and concisting line up of brothers.
You describe your music as Black Metallic Stellar Darkness. What does this definition mean?
Well, actually labeling music and restrict it or categorize it is nothing I am very enthusiastic about. I let the music and it’s tunes and expression tell its own story and the listener must decide where the music takes you. When that is said is no secret that most people will label us in the category of the Norwegian Black Metal bands. Black Metallic Stellar Darkness represent our expression and attitude towards the art we practice and preach.
Does a band have to evolve along its career and change its sound according to the inspiration? Or is it always better to keep the cornerstones?
Depends what the bands goal and idea is. For us we never make music to follow what’s hot right here right now, we make music based on our feelings and how we like represent our feelings. It’s a kind of soundtrack to our emotions. We want to bring the fire and the burning philosophy and the tunes we make to support that is often woven from diffrent inspirations. That just happen there and then. For us its not important to follow strickt rules or guidelines when writing music. I think it comes natural that you stand behind your cornerstone, if your relations and history is strong enough.
“The Arkane Abyss” is your last effort. Are you happy with the final result? How are your fans reacting to the new songs?
The Arcane Abyss turned out to be huge success for us, Media responded with great and superb enthusiasm with reviews and critics giantly overwhelming. We are ver pleased with the result, we worked hard on th ealbum to make it sound and be just what we wanted it to be. And of course we are satisfied when the critics and respons are so massivly amazing. The Fans have been nothing but stoked about the new material. You will always have few people always telling that the old stuff is the best, but that’s how it is…Few album later this album is the old stuff !
What are the main topics of your lyrics? Is it music a good way to share your thoughts and send a message to the masses?
The world of Endezzma is a deep dive into the depths of our darker mind. It’s in one way our personal relationship to the darkside and how we relate to death. Our death and death in general is something that control how we live our lives, even we like to think that death is a topic that just arrive when a accident occur or we become old. It’s strong feelings and strong emotions that is a driving force in our daily life. Creating a own philosophical saga about death. I always been fascinated by death and let myself go with it’s emotional contradiction, in one way the most beautiful and on the other it can be the most heart breaking. Such intense, vital and strong forces really possess me and thrill me. It is all around us, so it is no need to make up stupid stories when the real and most intense vibes is all around us to grab.
How would you describe your live performances?
We have a strong, strict and important live mantra. Our live rituals are very important for us and we all go into a certain sphere before enter stage. This is where were we dive into the world of Endezzma. We always give everything we have, mentally and physically on stage, it’s in one way just comes natutal when you are so deep into what you are doing, it’s burning your skin sort of. A Endezzma performance must be intense and disturbing.
You’ve just played two gigs in Italy, has it been the first time for you in our country?
Yes, we did. It was actually the first time for Endezzma in Italy. So it was about time.
Did you enjoy playing here? What do you think about the italian crowd?
We always have strong emotions to our live rituals and this time was no exceptions. The Italian crowd was maybe a bit static in the start, but they loosen up throughout the performance.
What do you think about the italian Metal scene? Do you know any band?
I am not too well aware or into the Italian metal scene, but we played with a handful of Italian support bands and some of them have a bright future i guess. From what i learned i understood its many bands growing out from the scene these day’s.
What are you plans for the future? Are you planning more live gigs or summer fetivals?
Yes, we are booking frequently these days, both single shows and festivals in support of The Arcane Abyss. Next month we play Czeck Rep and 3 shows in Poland, in May we play the Incineration festival in London, We booked many dates in Germany this year as well as in Switzerland, Austria and Holland. So 2018 will be a busy year for Endezzma and since we already started to ink bookings in 2019, the future looks intense. We also work on new material for next album in between, hopefully we go back in studio before the end of the year.
